South Amboy Councilman Called Back to Iraq

SOUTH AMBOY – The South Amboy Democratic Organization has announced that the City’s Third Ward Councilman, John F. O’Connell, who also serves as an officer in the reserve component of the United States Air Force, has been called to temporary active duty service and will report to the Multi National Force – Iraq Headquarters, Baghdad, Iraq in early June. Councilman O’Connell, who returned in June 2006 after serving as a Strategic Planner and Legal Advisor on the staff of General George Casey will be returning to that position under the current commander of the Multi National Force, General David Petraeus. He is scheduled to return to the United States this December.
O’Connell, who also serves as the chairman of the South Amboy Democratic Organization (SADO), was recently appointed to fill the vacancy on the City Council following the retirement of former Council President James Reick. O’Connell, who is slated to be on the ballot in a special election this year, will step down as chairman of the SADO. The Organization, which is scheduled to meet on May 10th, will choose a successor to O’Connell as chairman, and at O’Connell’s request, will determine whether to replace O’Connell on the ballot in the June primary election.
